Well… here at WHC we learn about parallelograms AND how to do your own taxes! It’s such an important life skill that enhances financial literacy and can save your child thousands of dollars over the years (by not having to hire this out).
 
This resource is an individual life skills project that will take 3-5 days (45-60 min a day) depending on the discussion involved. Geared for ages 12-19 (even adults would benefit from this if they’ve never filed their own taxes).
 
It includes:
2 Fake people with all their personal information, T4s and relevant tax slips and receipts.
Info pages on Filing taxes, CPP, Deductions, credits, etc.
Linked videos from CRA for Beginner Tax Prep with follow up questions.
A T1 highlighting Scavenger Hunt
Tips and notes on filing out certain forms and line calculations.
 
What this resource is NOT:
Due to the nature of using government forms there are some limitations to a resource like this.
It does not include a comprehensive line by line instruction on filling out the forms (but don’t worry, the forms are very explicit in their instructions and the CRA provides a comprehensive line by line guide).
It does not include a line by line answer key with amounts and calculations.
A final amount (refund or balance owing) is given for the first fake person but not the other. Price reflects this :)

I used this with my own kids (13 and 15) and it really helped them understand so much about income tax and about filing taxes. We printed copies for each of us and worked through it together. It elicited so much discussion. Get it in the shop and take this step towards equipping your kids for adult life!
