This “My Life in Lists” journal is a wonderful addition to any ELA program and will provide a quick bite sized, motivating way to get your kids writing. It can be used over and over as the answers are bound to change through the years and you’ll end up with these sweet memoir lists.

The journal has 49 prompt pages + 10 blanks. It’s a half fold format so it only takes 16 pages double sided to print and you can bind it into a book!

I once attended a memoir writing workshop by a published author and one of my biggest takeaways was her recommendation to “Start with the lists. Even if you never get past writing lists about your life they are a memoir in of themselves.” (Paraphrased by me).

I’ve spent 20 years as an educator (a decade as a public school ELA teacher and then a decade of homeschooling my own children) and I think lists are one of the most underrated and underutilized writing projects. So here’s my sales pitch for the inclusion of list writing in your ELA program.

Lists:

  • generally carry a purpose and thus are motivating.
  • appeal to reluctant writers because of their brevity and concise nature.
  • foster concise and to the point writing.
  • have a defined beginning and end which appeals to many writers (eg. List 5 injuries you’ve had).
  • foster organizational skills in writing.
  • create a foundation for more in depth writing and can easily be expanded upon in paragraphs or a “Listicle” format. Think List + Article.
  • provide snapshots or summaries of information
