NEW UPGRADED VERSION
This unit is completely open and go and provides a thorough foundation of the study of genetics and inheritance. It is best suited for grades 6-10 (depending on the student).
In this unit I’ve done my best to collect the key concepts of inheritance and boil them down for an introduction that engages students and provides plenty of practical application.
Students will first start with a brief synopsis of what cells, chromosomes, DNA, genes and alleles are. The magnifying glass cut out illustration helps them garner understanding of understanding where they each fit.
We then move into inherited traits and foundations of Mendelian Inheritance. Here students learn about the history of Gregor Mendel, what he discovered, how it was and is applied today and then learn how to calculate crosses using Punnet Squares.
Students will become comfortable with genotypes and how they are expressed as phenotypes and be able to work backwards to deduce unknown genotypes based on known factors. They’ll gain understanding of pedigrees and how to track inheritance.
The unit is full of interesting human genetic traits and students get to survey their biological family members and attempt to discover genotypes present in themselves, their parents and siblings.
We also venture into science fiction and complete genotype and phenotype tables for creating fictional monsters known as Fangs from Andrew Peterson’s “Wingfeather Saga”
Included in the unit are links to helpful youtube videos and books to source from your library to supplement the information and activities. These are not needed at all (the unit is complete in itself) but they add helpful repetition.
